Clemson lands five-star linebacker Sammy Brown
Dabo Swinney continues to work his magic landing five-star linebacker Sammy Brown, who is ranked as the best linebacker and fifth-best player overall in the 2024 class. according to 247Sports. He becomes the highest-rated linebacker ever to commit to Clemson.
Brown announced his commitment Monday night with his final list being to Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State and Tennessee. Clearly, a pretty elite list to be choosing from as a prospect, showing just how coveted this kid was.
“So I had a meeting with (Swinney) to just talk about where I’m at,” he said. “And he basically said that he wants me to commit when I’m ready. And I told him that I am ready right now. I’m pretty sure Coach Swinney jumped up onto his table when I told him.”

Now while it’s still impressive to land a prospect of this caliber. It was made a little easier by Brown being a Clemson football fan growing up as a kid.
“It’s almost surreal to think that I kinda kept up with them growing up, watching the players and the success,” he said. “To now finally have the opportunity to be a part of what I grew up watching is just a blessing. I can remember taking my picture at the Dabo Swinney football camp every summer and thinking about how cool that was.”

Now obviously more than just this played into Brown’s decision. But you also can’t say that it didn’t have any effect either and surely didn’t hurt Clemson’s chances at all. In fact, I personally would be willing to bet that it played a somewhat significant role. But then again, I could totally be wrong and we would never know.
It’s really no surprise though that so many different schools were targeting this kid. In his junior year at Jefferson High in Jefferson, Ga., he rushed for 1,459 yards and 21 touchdowns while also adding on 246 receiving yards and three more touchdowns. He recorded 113 tackles, five for a loss, one sack, an interception and four pass breakups.
Oh yeah, he was also a two-time state wrestling champ and apparently one of the top sprinters in the state. The point is the kid can seemingly do it all both on and off the football field. Now, I know in years past, this hasn’t usually boded well for prospects. It’s usually better to stick to one position and master it rather than playing a bunch at an average level.
But I don’t think that will be the case for Sammy Brown. I think he will slot right in as a linebacker and work perfectly in Dabo Swinney’s system. He has a rather ideal build for a linebacker at 6-foot-2, 230 pounds, with time to grow and put on more weight while in college.
Truth be told I can’t tell you how Sammy Brown will pan out at the college level. I can’t say I’m smart enough to truly evaluate his talent and how it translates, but what I can say is he is freakishly athletic for his size which should play well in Clemson’s system.
I’m sure Dabo Swinney will find a use for Sammy Brown. He may not be the most polished right now, but his raw athleticism alone will make him useful. He’s a great addition for this Clemson defense and I’m sure very soon we will be hearing his name on Saturday’s.
