Class of 2022 five-star forward Jarace Walker has committed to Houston, per an announcement on Instagram Live with ESPN’s Paul Biancardi. Walker is the third pledge for coach Kelvin Sampson in the 2022 class.
The IMG Academy star is the highest ranked recruit in the modern era in Houston’s history. Walker chose the Cougars over Alabama and Auburn, among multiple other offers. The 6-8 forward joins four stars Terrance Arceneaux and Emanuel Sharp in what is becoming an elite recruiting class for Sampson.
Walker told ESPN that the energy surrounding the program, plus the team’s recent success, including their 2021 Final Four run, played a large role in the decision.
“There is great energy around the program and everyone gets along. On my visit, it felt like a family with the staff and players. My family connected with the staff and the players really well. Their Final Four success and their program winning at the college level was definitely a factor.”

Walker also lauded the education Sampson can give him as a coach and former college basketball star with NBA pedigree.
“It will be great to pick his brain each day about the game. His NBA experience is impressive. He is a legend in the college game. His name is really big in the basketball world. He is such a good defensive coach and he showed me how they get their shooters open for shots. Their skill development was important for me to play at the next level.”

Walker is an absolute physical specimen. His superb athleticism aside, his aforementioned frame and weight at 220 pounds sets himself apart from his fellow teenagers. His shooting is still a work in progress – he can knock down the occasional 3-pointer – but his physical tools allow him to get downhill in a hurry. He can finish around and above the rim with ease.
Walker projects as a traditional wing or hybrid power forward at the collegiate level; his size alone can compensate for any height disadvantages he may have on the defensive end. And if you aren’t hooked already, he is a committed rebounder and an underrated passer too. Ultimately, Sampson and the Houston faithful are not only getting their highest-rated recruit in the modern era, but an absolute workhorse on both sides of the ball.
