The Cincinnati Reds have hired Terry Francona as the franchise’s next manager, MLB.com insider Mark Feinsand first reported Thursday evening.
The Reds recently fired manager David Bell after six seasons, making only postseason appearance over that duration, which came in the COVID-shortened season as the No. 7 seed in the NL.
Francona, 65, had previous stops with the Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Guardians, where he managed 11 seasons. He’s managed over 3,600 games in his career, posting a 1950-1672 record across 23 seasons with two World Series titles three pennants and three Manager of the Year awards.
He took a year off managing in 2024 after the mutually parting ways with Cleveland after 2023. Francona made the postseason five times with Cleveland, including winning one pennant in 2016 after the team finished 94-67. Francona’s one of the most respected managers in the sport; it’s a slam dunk hire for an organization that hasn’t won a postseason appearance since 1995.
The Reds have one of the electric players in the sport in Elly De La Cruz, though they have a below-average supporting cast (in a hitter-friendly park) and a below-average pitching staff. Rearranging the manager isn’t going to solve all of their problems, even though Francona is as good of a hire as one could ask for.
