Reds call up MLB’s No. 4 Prospect Elly De La Cruz

At long last, the Cincinnati Reds have called up the MLB’s No. 4 prospect, Elly De La Cruz, the team announced Tuesday.

This has been a day long awaited by many Reds fans since mid May, when De La Cruz began to tear up Triple-A Louisville.

In 2023, Elly De La Cruz slashed .297/.398/.633 with 12 homers and 11 stolen bases over 38 games. Last year, between High-A Dayton and Double-A Chattanooga, De La Cruz hit .304/.359/.586 with 28 homers and 47 steals in 121 games.

He became the first minor leaguer since 2014 to hit .300 with at least 25 HR and 40 stolen bases. He also won Player of the Year and was a Midwest League All-Star. Safe to say, the Reds have found a superstar that will give the franchise a much-needed boost.

The Reds placed utility man Nick Senzel on the 10-day injured list after he suffered a right knee injury, which prompted the De La Cruz call-up. The Reds have already called up Matt McLain who mostly plays shortstop but can move to second if needed, and he’s been excellent so far this season. McLain is hitting .329/.389/.500 with two homers and one stolen base over 19 games since breaking into the majors.

Elly De La Cruz is set to make his debut against the Dodgers Tuesday, hitting in the cleanup spot. The Reds posted their lineup earlier today on Twitter, and have addressed the issue of how they are going to play all the young talent they have in the infield. De La Cruz will play at 3rd, Matt McLain will play at shortstop and Jonathan India will be at 2nd.
