Star Cincinnati Defensive Tackle Dontay Corleone was hospitalized on June 14th with complaints of chest discomfort and shortness of breath. As we have learned, Corleone was diagnosed with blood clots in his lungs and has been ruled out indefinitely. He is currently back home, with no timetable for return to football activities.
Corleone released a statement through the school (full quote via ESPN.com):
“My hope is I will be able to return to football soon, but in the meantime, I will do everything I can to rehab and help the football program as a leader and mentor to our younger players,” Corleone said in a statement released by the school. “I’m looking forward to being around the guys soon.”
Dontay Corleone, the star of the Bearcats defensive unit, totaled 83 tackles last season, 12 of which were for loss, in a 3-9 campaign for Cincinnati who was entering their first season in the Big 12.
“We know he is going to do everything he can to pour into our program while he recovers and focuses on his health,” Cincinnati coach Scott Satterfield said. “My top concern is for Dontay’s health. Football isn’t a priority right now.”
I had Dontay Corleone on my Stallions list for 2024, as I had high hopes for the promising young DT. This diagnosis does not deter my thoughts on him, as when he gets back on to the field he will continue to be the game-wrecking interior lineman we have come to expect. Corleone, a Junior this upcoming season, has NFL upside based on his stellar frame (6’2, 320 pounds) and his relentless effort, among a bounty of other quality traits. I know I speak for everyone in wishing Corleone a speedy recovery, and we all look forward to seeing him back on the field.
