The Cincinnati Bengals have signed veteran receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins to sizable four-year extensions, Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz was among the first to report Sunday evening.
Chase signed a four-year, $161 million deal while Higgins inked a four-year, $115 million deal.
Chase’s deal is the highest for a non-quarterback in the NFL in terms of average annual value, which exceeds $40 million; Higgins is also the richest WR2 in the NFL, with his extension coming nearly a month after it was reported the Bengals were focusing on a long-term deal for him.
According to Schultz, both of their cap hits will be lower for this season than it was last year, giving the franchise extra flexibility to make an additional move. We don’t know what their final numbers are nor how the cash flow will look at the time of this publishing, however.
While Cincinnati’s defense has a lot to be desired, quarterback Joe Burrow will have his two best pass-catchers alongside him for the foreseeable future. Chase led the NFL in receptions (127), yards (1,708) and touchdowns (17) last season, setting career marks in each of those respective categories; Higgins has totaled at least 900 yards in four of his first five seasons with at least six scores in each of those campaigns. He’s a machine as a No. 2 receiver.
The Bengals got their guys. Now it’s time to focus on plugging the gaping holes on their defense–especially without elite pass rusher Trey Hendrickson.
