Chris Benoit’s son interested in AEW over WWE

Son of controversial late-WWE Superstar Chris Benoit, David, could just become “All-Elite” once his training is complete.

The Canadian-born wrestler had a well-received career and was best known for his tenures in WCW and WWE. Chris Benoit seemingly left behind a monumental legacy as a wrestler, and even held the title of a “Grand Slam Champion” before his passing in 2007. Unfortunately, the double murder-suicide of his wife and youngest son destroyed his legacy, resulting in him being all but erased from the sport he dedicated his life to.

Sadly for David Benoit–Chris’ son from his first marriage–his father’s final actions cast a shadow over his life. Despite this, many fans of Benoit’s wrestling career have constantly urged David to become a pro wrestler like his father.

During an interview with Chis Van Vliet, the 30-year-old revealed that he planned to wrestle under the moniker “Chris Benoit Jr.” Additionally, he revealed that he trained in WWE legend Lance Storm’s wrestling school in Calgary, Canada but did not complete the program.

During his interview with Van Vliet, David Benoit revealed that he was, in fact, “messing around” with AEW talent in the ring. Additionally, he claimed that he plans to someday debut in AEW.

“I’m just messing around in the ring right now with a couple of guys from AEW,” he said. “I want to go to AEW one hundred percent. I love AEW. I love what they do for the boys. Take care of them.”

David notably met CM Punk at ringside when AEW Collision was last in Canada. Over the years it’s been claimed that Chris Benoit was initially meant to defeat Punk in 2007’s WWE Vengeance pay-per-view. Because of this, the meeting of the two men was more bittersweet than many realized.

During his interview with Chris Van Vliet, David was naturally asked what he felt regarding his father’s final weekend alive. According to the 30-year-old, he doesn’t associate those horrible acts with the Chris Benoit he knew, as it’s become a widely accepted fact that he suffered from CTE (Chronic traumatic encephalopathy).

“That wasn’t him man. He would never do that. I know he wouldn’t,” Benoit said, according to Wrestling Inc. “I think something went terribly wrong. The doctor said he had CTE. At the beginning, that somewhat gave me closure. He had CTE, so I don’t think that was him.”

According to David, he didn’t notice anything odd about his father leading up to the tragedy and had plans to move in with him. In regard to his relationship with his half-brother, Daniel, David only had good things to say and proclaimed that he loved his little brother. VICE’s Dark Side of the Ring notably did a thorough documentary of Chris Benoit’s career, death and friendship with Eddie Guerrero.
