Chip Kelly would rather be an offensive coordinator at a Big Ten school than a head coach at a Big Ten School. That literally happened. Except for the part where Kelly was already a head coach and gave himself a demotion.
Chip Kelly is the new offensive coordinator at Ohio State. I don’t know how this happened but this is the world we now live in.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel was the first to report the news. Thamel is reporting that Kelly will take a $4 million pay cut to make this move. The deal is a three year deal so it sure sounds like Kelly will be there for awhile.
“We are extremely excited to have Chip and his wife, Jill, joining our program,” Day said. “His experience as a head coach at Oregon, UCLA and in the NFL will bring immediate value to our entire team. I am really looking forward to reconnecting with Chip, presenting him to our staff and team and chasing a championship together.
“I would also like to wish coach Bill O’Brien and his family well as he takes over at Boston College.”
What’s crazy is this job only opened up because Bill O’Brien took the Boston College job. O’Brien otherwise was set to be the OC for the Buckeyes.
Keep in mind, UCLA officially joins the Big 10 this year. Also, keep in mind that UCLA contemplating firing Kelly. Who knows how all this went down but clearly he wanted out of there.
Oh, and one more thing. UCLA players can now go back in the portal even after the window closed now that Kelly left. He really cheesed that program doing this now.
NIL and transfer portal. Get used to it. Some of these coaches just don’t want to deal with this stuff. This might just be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to weird coaching movements.
