Matt Araiza is finally going to make his NFL debut! The Chiefs continue their dominance over the rest of the NFL and will now add the punt god on their side. The man who was known as a generational punter coming out of San Diego State has signed a contract with Kansas City.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the news:
Matt Araiza and his agent both released statements on social media.
“We are grateful to Brett Veach, coach Reid and the @Chiefs organization for giving Matt this opportunity,” agent Joe Linta wrote on X.
“I am proud and honored to sign a contract with the @Chiefs,” Araiza said in a statement released through his agent. “I am thrilled to be able to continue my NFL career. I want to thank my family, who have been my rock and my many friends who have been unwavering in their support. I am excited to begin the next phase of my career with the Super Bowl Champs!”
From a football perspective, the Chiefs are taking some risk here. Certainly a calculated one. Araiza was wrongly accused of rape and will be signing for dirt cheap. Unfortunate, but that’s the reality of the situation. However, that’s not the risky part of this move. Tommy Townsend is a free agent this offseason and Kansas City is just going to let him walk. Townsend was first-team All-Pro this past year. It’s not just a given they can replace that production. With KC in cap hell, in reality, this is probably a smart move to reduce costs to allocate that to the rest of the roster.
