Oklahoma City Thunder big man Chet Holmgren suffered a right pelvic fracture after a hard fall in Sunday’s game against the Golden State Warriors, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported Sunday. He will not be re-evaluated for the next 8-10 weeks, meaning he could miss up to 3-4 months.
Holmgren’s hard fall was after attempting to block an Andrew Wiggins layup attempt in the first quarter of Sunday’s game, which Wiggins converted. Holmgren was helped to the locker room while not being able to put any weight on his right leg. He logged just four rebounds in five minutes before the injury
Holmgren, who missed his rookie season with a lisfranc injury in his right foot, voiced his frustration on social media after the game with having to deal with a second long-term lower-body injury in three years.
Holmgren looked like he was the arguable frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year through the first two weeks of the season, averaging 2.9 blocks and 3.8 stocks across just 28.8 minutes per game, spearheading the league’s top defense. While they’re still stout with Alex Caruso, Jalen Williams, Luguentz Dort and Cason Wallace, the complexion on the back line is different without Holmgren.
The 7-footer is elite at altering shots around the rim with great verticality and hand-eye coordination, making it difficult for even players like Andrew Wiggins to finish through him. I’m fascinated to see how they piece it together before Isaiah Hartenstein returns from injury, although my guess would be Ousmane Dieng claims the role as the starting center (for now).
