Chelsea has signed yet another player to a long-term contract. This time, the Blues have inked French defender Axel Disasi to a six-year contract with the club, Fabrizio Romano first reported early Friday morning. Chelsea paid his former club AS Monaco a €45 million ($49.23 million) transfer fee to secure his services.
The 25-year-old will provide Chelsea with an option for another right-sided center-back. Wesley Fofana is expected to be out for a considerable amount of time due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury, so Disasi will provide Mauricio Pochettino’s side extra support in that position.
“I am so happy to be here, at this big club. I am really proud to be able to be a part of this great family, and I hope to achieve very big things here,” Disasi said. “To win titles. I will do everything I can to achieve those objectives. I am very ambitious.”
“The fervour of the fans in the Premier League, the atmosphere, the intensity of the games: it is something that excites me.”
This is a good signing for Chelsea. Disasi is a physically gifted center-back, standing at 6-foot-3. He is incredibly strong, and his imposing size helps his overall game.
He is also a gifted tackler, especially when it comes to last-ditch tackles. However, since he is good at tackling, he can be prone to go to the ground too easily at times. This is still one of his strongest attributes, however.
Disasi is also quite experienced for a 25-year-old center-back. Before moving to Chelsea, he had made 130 Ligue 1 appearances. While Ligue 1 is not as high of a league as the Premier League, it is still a top-five league that can provide players with invaluable experience. He has also been capped four times by France, three of which came during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
This is Chelsea’s sixth summer signing under new manager Mauricio Pochettino. The club has also signed Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, Diego Moreira, Ângelo Gabriel and Lesley Ugochukwu.
Hopefully, for Chelsea, Disasi can help strengthen the club’s backline this season.
