Charles Barkley Tried To Get Deion Sanders Hired At Auburn
If it were up to Charles Barkley, Deion Sanders would be coaching Auburn right now. When Bryan Harsin lost his job at Auburn, it turns out that Barkley really tried to lobby for Coach Prime to enter the building.
“I made it publicly and privately known that I wanted Deion. That’s all I could do. I really wanted Deion at Auburn,” Barkley said.
“I think wherever he goes he’s gonna be successful. He’s just that great of a coach and a person.”
Chuck thinks Coach Prime has the It factor and even threw in a Saban comp.
“He reminds me a lot of Nick Saban, and I think Nick Saban’s the greatest coach ever. He’s not afraid to hire great assistants. You look at Deion’s staff, and I think everyone either played or was a head coach somewhere. I think what separates Saban.
Hugh Freeze ended up getting the job with Auburn. For what it’s worth, Barkley believes that Freeze is a really good hire too.
“You know what, I have to be careful with that Dan, we hired Hugh Freeze and I’m all in on Coach Freeze, but I really want Deion at Auburn. We’ve got Coach Freeze now and I’ve got to support him 100 percent,” Barkley said.
Time will tell if Auburn made the correct decision here. Freeze, 54, carries a 77-48 career record. He’s doing really well in terms of recruiting too. What can’t be denied is that Auburn would have had a way better quarterback situation had Coach Prime gotten the job instead. Payton Thorne and Robby Ashford have both been disasters. Shedeur Sanders certainly would have been an upgrade there. Travis Hunter would have been nice too, huh?
