The Celtics are finally adding some elbow grease to the team! Albeit, worse elbow grease that was previously on the roster in the form of Grant Williams and Marcus Smart, but it’s better than nothing! The Celtics had an open roster spot and that’s now been filled. Boston has signed Lamar Stevens to a one year contract.
Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link) was the first to report the news:
For starters, it seems as though Austin Rivers will no longer get his wish. Austin, the son of Doc, was pushing to get that final roster spot in Boston. It appears that’s now no longer on the table given the signing of Stevens. Boston has made a few moves like this and would anticipate the deal comes at the minimum like what Dalano Banton and Svi Mykhailiuk signed for.
Stevens, 26, is only on the open market because of the Max Strus deal. Stevens was sent out by Cleveland and was later waived by San Antonio. Had Cleveland not gotten their hands on Strus, Stevens may have still been on the Cleveland roster.
The former Penn State product is thought to be a really good perimeter defender. He can play bully ball down low but isn’t exactly a great pure shooter. In 62 games last season, Stevens averaged 5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game on .448/.316/.702 shooting. That was across 18.1 minutes per night. Not earth shattering numbers but a much needed bench piece. This Celtics team is incredibly thin at the wing spots behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
