It’s not all sunshine and rainbows after the Jrue Holiday trade. The deal itself was a no-brainer (execs seem to love the deal for Boston). The problem is this trade does put the Celtics over the second apron of the luxury tax. How does the Celtics’ ownership group feel about that and are they willing to spend for this team?
Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck claims that he’s going to spend whatever it takes to support the team that is in place right now (link to the Jrue Holiday introductory presser)
“We haven’t blinked at all,” Grousbeck told reporters Wednesday of the second apron, per MassLive’s Souichi Terada. “I was part of the committee that put the aprons in place with the players committee and we’re aware of all that. We’re going to be over the second I believe, Brad (Stevens), and paying those penalties and that’s the way life is. But it’s designed also we can have more competition in the league, and we’re fine with competition, as long as we win.”
Boston is going to have some challenges to deal with moving forward. They are now locked into this core and won’t be able to add to it beyond veteran minimum contracts. Boston will have a first round pick frozen down the line and will no longer have the option to use a mid-level exception. The good news is it doesn’t sound like the ownership group is too worried about it as long as this group delivers and wins at a high level.
