As we all know, the Cowboys traded Amari Cooper to the Browns for quite literally a bag of chips and a Sunkist. That means the pecking order for the WR has seemingly changed. However, last year, I had CeeDee Lamb as the Cowboys’ #1 WR anyway due to Amari Cooper being prone to disappear in many games. However, it is the natural consensus that Lamb is now the Cowboys’ #1 WR and the Cowboys could do far worse than Lamb. Full quote by Dak Prescott provided by ProFootballTalk:
“Yeah, there’s no doubt he is (ready to replace Cooper as the team’s No. 1 receiver),’’ Prescott said. “I think that’s the best part of that move. You look at a guy like CeeDee and what he’s done in his first two years, it’s exciting. He hasn’t really scratched the surface. Just for him to be the one, to be the main guy, I know he’s going to be ready for it.
“I know he’s already doing the things he needs to do that are necessary to have a great season.’’
Mike McCarthy even chimed in with CeeDee Lamb’s progress so far in his career.
“Look at his trajectory,’’ Cowboys coach McCarthy told Moore this weekend. “Look at what he’s done from year one to year two. Now, he’ll have to take another step. It will be a different step for him because there will be more attention on him. He’ll be more of a focal point for the defense. But with that greater responsibility will come more opportunities for him to improve even more.’’
McCarthy is right about that. We saw this with Juju in 2018. Juju had a fantastic season but he was lined up on the other side of Antonio Brown. AB took a lot of the defense’s attention and Juju benefitted from it. Juju struggled after AB left because now he was the new #1 WR. Not saying CeeDee Lamb isn’t better than Juju, but the situation is similar.
If you were smart, you could have known that CeeDee Lamb was already the Cowboys’ #1 WR. But, now it is obvious. Despite Amari Cooper’s disappearing acts, his void will be felt in the Cowboys’ offense. Lamb is going to have to become a big boy and be able to catch while he becomes more a focal point for the defenses facing the Cowboys. I’m sure he can handle it.
