Ceddanne Rafaela missed phone call about his promotion due to playing PlayStation

As normal people, we have become used to watching professional athletes do things we could only dream of. As a result, people tend to value what athletes do or say more than the average person. We also admire a lot of these guys and look at them in almost an unfair light, but what we tend to forget is that they are still normal people at the end of the day. Boston Red Sox prospect Ceddanne Rafaela just proved that.

On Monday, the Red Sox announced that they were calling Rafaela up to the show. This was after he tore through the minor leagues finally forcing the Red Sox hand into calling him up. Signed for $10K out of Curacao, Rafalea quickly shot up the Red Sox farm system and became a top 3 prospect in their system, per MLB Pipeline.

It’s probably the most important and best day of the kid’s life. But Ceddanne Rafaela was apparently focused on other things when the Red Sox decided to give him the promotion. Apparently, Ceddanne Rafela was deep into a gaming session on his PS5, missing the initial calls to let him know of his promotion.

Honestly, the only question I have is: What was Ceddanne Rafaela playing? Was he grinding out his Road to the Show before doing so in real life? Or maybe he got a late start on Elden Ring and is trying to finish that? Or maybe it’s none of those and he’s a Fortnite kind of guy. I guess we will never know.

Of course, some people tried blowing this out of proportion claiming he would never succeed at the MLB level because of this. But for the most part, people with common sense don’t care and find the whole situation more funny than anything–especially when you realize just how many different prospects this has happened to. Orioles prospect Colton Coswer missed multiple calls from the Orioles GM on draft night. Giants prospect Casey Schmidt was out watching Guardians of the Galaxy.

Two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic was asleep when the Nuggets called him to let him know he had been drafted. So really this shouldn’t be a big deal at all.

This should just serve as a reminder that these guys aren’t really too different from the rest of us. Sure, they can hit a 99 MPH fastball, but at least we both miss important things because we are distracted by video games. Best of luck to Ceddanne Rafaela.
