Cashman: WS Gap is Misleading Because of Cheating Astros

Here comes yet another reason to hate the Yankees. New York’s General Manager Brian Cashman recently told MLB Network that he thinks the Yankees’ 15-year gap between World Series appearances is fraudulent. This is because he believes the team would have made it to the 2017 World Series if it weren’t for the Houston Astros.

If you recall, the Yankees and the Astros met in the 2017 ALCS. The Astros went on to win the series in seven games and eventually won their first-ever World Series championship, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games. There is a large asterisk next to this title run, however, as the Astros were caught illegally stealing signs.

Afterward, the MLB took away the Astros’ first and second-round picks in the next two drafts and fined the ball club $5 Million. The team’s then-manager and General Manager were suspended and eventually fired.

It is for this reason that Yankees GM Brian Cashman believes the team’s Championship drought is misleading. On a recent appearance on MLB Network’s High Heat, Cashman said, “I hate the 15-year thing because it completely forgets and discounts that some other organization cheated us when we were all the way in the end. If you knew what was going on, I don’t think they would be advancing … I think we would’ve been advancing. I hate that 15-year thing because I don’t think it accurately reflects history. But regardless, we’re proud to be where we are now.”

We will see if Cashman and the Yankees put their money where their mouth is and capture that illustrious 28th World Series championship as the team takes on the Dodgers in this year’s World Series. Game one is Friday in Los Angeles. It will be Gerrit Cole on the mound for New York and Jack Flaherty for LA.
