Carton and Roberts Top ESPN in New York Radio Ratings

Craig Carton and Evan Roberts are the top dogs in the New York radio wars, defeating Michael Kay and ESPN. Andrew Marchand from the New York Post had the story.

Marchand really hates their show, and in his article spent a good majority of it bashing Carton for his personality and antics.

“In the grand tradition of WFAN afternoons, Craig Carton can be inaccurate, obnoxious and a bit much to take.”

That was the lead to this story, I thought writers at these big media companies were supposed to keep their opinions and biases out of their writing? The win for Carton is not surprising at all, he was a staple of sports talk radio every weekday morning on WFAN.

After running a ticket scheme as a front to pay off his gambling debts, Carton went to federal prison. When the news initially broke, the network removed all traces of his existence for their set and website. Marchand for some reason hates a comeback story and just continued to bash the show.

“When [Carton] does his gambling addiction prevention show on Saturdays, we hear a more empathetic person. To borrow a phrase, Weekend Carton is better than Weekday Carton.

Meanwhile, Roberts has become a bit more assertive but does not have enough expertise or zaniness. He is stuck in the middle.”

The gambling side of Carton is absent meanwhile the world around him is shifting more and more towards gambling. The network he works for has gambling sponsors, and he is trying to keep his addiction under wraps. I happen to also like Roberts, he isn’t Boomer Esiason, but he can hold his own with the firey Carton.
