In an offseason that seems to get busier and busier, the Carolina Panthers keep it going, as it was reported Friday that they will be signing DJ Chark on a one-year deal, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport. While the exact figure hasn’t been released yet, I imagine it’s close to the league minimum.
As Rapoport noted, Carolina’s offense is one that is going through an entire rework. A rework made possible by the Panthers trading for the No. 1 pick, giving them full control of who their franchise quarterback will be.
The Panthers have gone out and signed players like Miles Sanders, Adam Thielen and Hayden Hurst, in an attempt to give whoever their QB will be some sort of stability when arriving. And the new addition of DJ Chark will do just that.
Chark isn’t a guy who is gonna go out and win you a football game, nor is he even some guy that defenses are gonna be up at night game planning for. But what he can be is a reliable option for whoever the Panthers draft and hopefully establish a connection with.
The 2019 Pro Bowl selection has seen a rather steep fall from grace. Chark has battled with multiple injuries and hasn’t been able to get back to that form that saw him rack up 73 receptions, 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns in 2019, his second NFL season. But maybe what he needs is a fresh start with a new QB. And in Carolina, he will get just that.
While at first glance these moves might not make sense. I think the Panthers are doing a great job at trying to build an offense that a rookie QB can come into and have guys that can make plays.
I think the Panthers still have a long way to go in terms of seriously contending. But if they hit on a QB this year and continue to build around whoever it may be, I very much believe the Panthers can be making some serious noise in the next few years.
In an NFC South that only seems to be getting worse, it may not even take that long.
