Carolina Panthers Hire Ben McAdoo As Offensive Coordinator

The Carolina Panthers have found their new offensive coordinator! Ben McAdoo, former head coach of the New York Giants, will be the new offensive coordinator in Carolina, per Ian Rapoport.

Ben McAdoo has been a coach at the NFL level since 2004. He started with the New Orleans Saints as an offensive quality control coordinator. He spent 2005 with the 49ers as their offensive line coach and offensive quality control coordinator. From 2006-2011, he was with the Green Bay Packers as their tight ends coach and acted as their quarterbacks coach from 2012-2013 (Aaron Rodgers was second team All-Pro in 2012). Finally, McAdoo got his chance as offensive coordinator for the Giants from 2014-2015, and became their head coach in 2016 and was fired after going 2-10 in 2017. After being fired, he took a couple of years off and returned in 2020 as the quarterbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Finally, in 2021, he was a consultant for the Dallas Cowboys.

McAdoo’s two years as a head coach showed VERY mixed results. In 2016 the Giants went 11-5 and lost to the Green Bay Packers in the wildcard round of the playoffs. Then the Giants were 2-10 in 2017 and McAdoo was fired. He had an incredibly short leash.

The New York Giants had a top-ten offensive in yards and points in 2015 when McAdoo was the head coach. However, that seems like more of an outlier during McAdoo’s tenure as his offenses were middle of the pack to bottom third of the league in other years (except for points in 2014 that ranked 10th). The Panthers are hoping he can make Sam Darnold work.
