It was as if things couldn’t get worse for the Carolina Panthers; they just did. After an absolute ass whooping handed down by the division rival New Orleans Saints, it has been announced that Pro Bowl defensive tackle Derrick Brown has suffered a torn meniscus. Brown is undoubtedly one of the best players on a weak Carolina roster. This is a huge blow to the team and its fans.
Nobody knows exactly when the injury occurred during Sunday’s 47-10 defeat (the largest week 1 loss in team history by the way) but what we do know is Brown needs knee surgery to repair his meniscus. At this time, it is unclear whether Derrick Brown will miss the rest of the season. However, he will miss a large portion of the 2024 campaign.
Derrick Brown is one of the few bright spots for the Panthers, and they know it. Earlier this off-season he was given a 4 year, $96 Million extension.
Brown was selected with the 7th pick in the first round of the 2020 draft by Carolina. He had an impressive college career at Auburn, racking up 170 total tackles and 5 forced fumbles in his 4 years there. After three decent seasons in Carolina, Brown exploded onto the scene last year. He had nearly half of all his career tackles in the 2023 season alone (103 of 248). That is why this injury hurts the team and its fans so badly. Brown is the cornerstone of the defense, and they planned to build the unit around him. In the same way, Bryce Young is the leader of the offense (supposedly) and they look to build around him.
We all knew the Panthers were not going to be great this year, so as far as the win/loss record I don’t know how much will change for Carolina. But fans will now be deprived of watching one of the young emerging stars of the NFL for most of the season. Without Derrick Brown, Panther’s games will be even more boring to watch than usual, which barely seems possible.
