The Cardinals have been by far the most active team during the 2023 MLB Free Agency window. St. Louis has already added Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson. Now they will add their third starter of the Winter in the form of Sonny Gray. The only difference is Gray actually got a multi-year deal compared to a one-year deal that Lynn and Gibson received earlier in the offseason.
Ken Rosenthal of the terrible publication that is The Athletic was the first to report the news:
Gray, 34, had a great year in 2023 with the Twins. The right-hander notched a 2.79 ERA in 32 starts across 184 total innings. That was his lowest ERA total since the 2015 campaign in Oakland when he made the All-Star team. Gray’s other All-Star appearance came in 2019 with Cincinnati.
The main takeaway here is how much the Cardinals beefed up this rotation. Miles Mikolas was really the only guy penciled in to eat innings. St. Louis has now added three capable starters to the mix. After a last place finish a season ago, the hope is obviously that these three starters will get the team back in the mix.
It’s worth noting that Gray has pitched poorly in big markets. The Yankees hated him. For whatever reason, Gray appears more comfortable in a smaller market. Some players are just wired that way. The Vanderbilt product is from Tennessee so he will be relatively close to home with this move.
