With Canelo Alvarez’s brutal win over Callum Smith on December 19, 2020, is it time to consider him one of the most elite pounds for pound boxers the world has seen? Is it safe to say that this boxer can go toe to toe with anyone that dares to stand in front of him?

Santos Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. He started training with Eddy Reynoso at a young age and turned professional at the age of 15.

He caught the world’s eye in 2013 when the young boxer at the age of 23 fought Floyd Mayweather at the age of 36. Mayweather handed Canelo his only loss so far, but there is an argument that Canelo was too young at the time.

Since his only loss, Canelo has fought some of boxing’s biggest names, such as Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto, Gennady Golovkin, Daniel Jacobs, Rocky Fielding, and many more.

These fights that the Golden Boy has fought have proven to be some of the best slugfests the boxing community has seen. He has won all of them because of his quick head movement and counter punches he is known for.

Canelo has proven to earn his respect from his opponents, not by his mouth but by his boxing style. Canelo has said to be the best; you have to beat the best;

” I (Canelo) have never feared anyone from the 15 years of my professional boxing career”… ” I (Canelo) always say the Canelo era is the best because I have always fought the best.” Canelo talking to Max Kellerman after his win against Julio Cesar Chavez on May 6, 2017

Beating the best is what he has done with having a professional boxing record of 54-1-2. (54 wins, 1 loss, 2 draws)

With Canelo Alvarez being the WBA and WBC super-middleweight champion, he now looks to fight Avni Yildirim. The bout should take place at the end of February.

The question now is, who will dethrone the Golden Boy of boxing? Will he be one of the best fighters to ever step in the ring? Is there someone who can defeat him and beat him down in the ring?
