Maycee Barber was once considered the future of the Women’s Flyweight Division, earning a contract from Dana White’s Contenders Series and looking incredible in her first three fights after the show. All the hype in the world was surrounding the 23-year old from Greeley, Colorado, but a two-fight losing streak both dominant unanimous decision losses has some questioning her future. Her upcoming fight against another rising prospect in Miranda Maverick puts doubts in some people’s heads that she still has it. Does “The Future” have what it takes to pull herself out of the depths and rise again, or is her star power gone for good?
Barber made her professional debut back in June of 2017 for LFA, earning a submission victory in the first round. The hype began there and skyrocketed, having one decision win in her 8 pro wins. Barber can win anywhere the fight goes. She has a 5.2 Significant strikes landed per minute average, meaning while the fight is on the feet she knows how to land and land with power. Her 52% striking accuracy is also impressive, towards the top of the division. Barber also has good wrestling, possessing an 80% takedown defense, meaning if someone shoots for a takedown on her, chances are not good. With these stats, you would think Barber is dominant, but there is just something missing there.
Maybe the issue is that she has such a massive social media following, she’s spending too much time focusing on that than actual training. The same case can be made for Paige VanZant. You can make the argument that her sky-high potential in the UFC was never met and that might be due partly to her following and doing too much outside of training. It is easy to lose focus on training and commitment when all the outside stuff can earn you massive amounts of money and fame. VanZant let her contract expire and joined BKFC (Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship) where she has yet to earn a victory. Maybe this is the same issue Maycee Barber is having.
Now look, I understand that Maycee Barber is only 23 years old, and there is all the time in the world to get better and learn, but when you come into a sport with as much potential as she had and underperform as she has as well, it’s hard not to think about was the pressure too much? Did we in the media put too much on her to handle? Can she ever live up to the hype she built? This Saturday, we find that out in her fight against Miranda Maverick.
