Anthony Firkser
Can Anthony Firkser become fantasy relevant in Tennessee? With Jonnu Smith gone, the former Harvard product has a big opportunity ahead. (Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports)

Can Anthony Firkser Become Fantasy Relevant?

Who? Yeah, exactly. Anyway… Anthony Firkser is the new starting tight end after Jonnu Smith left via free agency. The Titans didn’t bring in any tight end to even compete with Firkser. He’s the guy for this upcoming season. The question is whether Anthony Firkser has any shot to become fantasy relevant?

Firkser, 26, has gotten ample playing time in the past. During the 2020 season, the former Harvard product reeled in 39 receptions for 387 yards, and one touchdown. We know he’s smart. It’s about taking that next step now that he’s the man at the position.

It may not help that Tennessee is a run first offense. However, they absolutely need targets. I sort of mentioned the same thing in my post about Josh Reynolds. He’s filling in for Corey Davis as an unproven player about to get the opportunity for a much larger role. Tennessee is relying on both to be difference makers. If not, AJ Brown may be the one that suffers.

However, my point remains that there’s a heft target share up for grabs here. 157 targets have been vacated from the offense after Davis and Smith skipped town. The problem is, we don’t know if Firkser can even really play. The guy was an undrafted free agent out of Harvard. Maybe there’s just a ceiling here regardless and it’s not fantasy relevant.

This is probably one of those waiver wire of bye week situations. Probably can’t trust it before you see it but this is very much a situation to monitor.
