Caleb Williams denies Patrick Mahomes comparisons

It is easy to compare players to all sports in today’s game. I mean, how could you not? We want to find out who is going to be the best player in each draft and who they could mirror in their career. Sometimes the comparisons are good, sometimes they’re bad, and sometimes players hate comparisons. In this case, future No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams denies comparisons to two-time NFL MVP and two-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes.

Williams has been in the spotlight for his entire college career at Oklahoma and now USC. Last year’s Heisman Trophy winner is already gaining looks at being the potential first-overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft. With the draft far ahead, analysts are looking at comparing Williams to the NFL’s best in Mahomes. But why is Willaims denying it? Why don’t you want to be compared to one of the best players in the NFL?

“I don’t think anything of it. I’m my own self,” Williams recently said on the “Slow News Day” podcast. “I’m Caleb Williams, No. 13 for the USC Trojans. I don’t think too much of it other than, it’s respect.

“(Mahomes) has been the best guy in the league since he got in the league – at the highest level he’s been playing. I just say respect. The man’s got two Super Bowls under his belt, and I’ve got not even one national championship. … I’ve been working my tail off to try and be the best.”

Even Williams’ coach at USC Lincoln Riley sees the comparisons between his QB and Mahomes.

“There are some similarities,” Riley said, according to Connor Morrissette of 247Sports. “I think some of the vision and some of the creative arm angles. Also, the ability to get the ball out is similar.”

You cannot deny the comparisons between the two QBs, they both have out-of-this-world arm strength, accuracy and pocket presence. Not to mention, they have the same hair. But as Williams claimed, Mahomes has two Super Bowls under his belt, and he doesn’t even have a National Championship. They’re far from each in achievements, and the two are only getting started.

Quick side note, comparing prospects to actual professionals is the dumbest thing in sports. They might have the same attributes and skillets, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to be the same player. It’s just a way these so-called “analysts” can get more attention on each player and hype them up. Stop comparing, please.
