Fernando Mendoza entered the transfer portal after the season and he has now found his new home. The former Cal QB will be headed to Indiana University, which is fresh off the heels of an eleven-win season. Mendoza was the third-rated quarterback and twelfth-ranked prospect in the portal according to 247 Sports.
Fernando Mendoza had a great two years at Cal. This season he threw for 3,004 yards with 16 touchdowns and only six interceptions. Also, he led Cal to a bowl game and almost pulled off two major upsets against No. 8 Miami and No. 22 Pitt. Both of those losses were by less than three points.
Now, Mendoza will try to take the reigns at Indiana and build off an amazing season. Head coach Curt Cignetti completely turned the Hoosiers program around in one year. Indiana went from 3-9 in 2023 to the College Football Playoffs in 2024.
Mendoza will have some pressure on him to make it back to the College Football Playoffs after Indiana’s disappointing first-round game against Notre Dame. Cignetti must have a type as he is going from one 6’5 220-pound QB in Kurtis Rourke to another in Mendoza. However, Mendoza does offer a bit more mobility and he will only be a junior next year.
This next season will be Fernando Mendoza’s third conference in three years. He will have gone from the PAC 12 to the ACC to the Big Ten. Now, maybe after another great year next season, he can transfer to the SEC to conclude what would be a unique college path. Ultimately, Fernando Mendoza is a good QB who seems like a good fit at Indiana. It will be interesting to see if he can take the Hoosiers to the next level.
