We already went over the T’Vondre Sweat draft profile (click here for that). Now we’re doing the other Texas defensive tackle, Byron Murphy. Everything you need to know about Murphy will be listed in his 2024 NFL Draft Profile below.
As I mentioned in the post about Sweat, Texas was so damn good this year at stopping the run. Sweat handled a lot of that as the brick wall. However, Murphy was damn good in his own right. Maybe that’s just what Murphy needs. Exactly what the Bucs have right now with Vita Vea and Calijah Kancey. Have Murphy be the guy who wrecks the game with speed while pairing him with a bigger body to clog the middle.
Both those Texas guys were featured in the Stock Report notes all year. Murphy did damage all year. Wrecked the Texas Tech game. I probably should have gone into more detail on this one but he was unreal in the Washington game. Sweat and Murphy almost won that game by themselves.
Murphy, a former four star player from the state of Texas, checks in at 6-foot, 297. He also has over 32 inch arms. The Combine performance by Murphy was definitely impressive. You can tell he’s a loose twitched up bowling ball ready to rock. Good feet. Can sink his hips. Plenty of power. All the movement skills was a plus.
For a defensive tackle, the measurables here are impressive. Murphy ran a 4.87 and benched 28 on the bench. Definitely a compact ball of muscle that can win with leverage and power. Has good hands and isn’t a one trick pony with the pass rushing moves.
2023 was by far the best season for the Murphy. Mostly a rotational piece along the defensive line as a freshman and sophomore. In 2023 as a junior, Murphy was named to the Second-team Associated Press All-American, Big 12 Conference DL of the Year, and First-team All-Big 12 Conference. He also notched 29 tackles, 8.5 TFL with 5.0 sacks in his first year as the starter. Oh, and he also scored two offensive touchdowns being trusted as a goal line piece.
I like the player here. Especially as a 3-technique in a 3-4 or as the secondary DT in a 4-3. I have a round two grade on Byron Murphy. Should become a quality starter but his lack of early career production should worry some to pull the trigger too soon.
