Before all the fame and fortune, former Alabama quarterback Bryce Young had a humble beginning. So humble, in fact, that before NIL deals came along, he drove for DoorDash at the University of Alabama to get some extra money.
During his freshman year in 2020, Young would drive around campus and other parts of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to deliver food to customers. Imagine ordering food on DoorDash and having Bryce Young hand it to you. My jaw would be on the floor.
“Honestly, I would only have a mask on and a hoodie and I would only accept drop-it-at-my-door orders,” Young, who won the Heisman trophy in 2021, told ESPN at training camp Tuesday, via NYP.
“For the most part, I never got recognized,” Young said. “It was before NIL. I just wanted to have a little extra money.”
Now, we all can safely say Young won’t need that extra cash coming into his pocket. Yes, it would be nice, but frankly, when you sign a rookie contract worth almost $38 million, you don’t need a side job. Young has his own priorities, I’m sure.
Carolina ended last season with a below average record of 7-10, finishing ahead of the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons in a tiebreaker for second.
After three seasons with the Crimson Tide, Young became the consensus No. 1 overall selection in the 2023 NFL draft. In three seasons at Alabama, Young threw for 80 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions. He would add on over 8,300 passing yards on around a 64% completion rate.
In working with the Panthers this offseason, Young has impressed the Panthers’ coaching staff, including head coach Frank Reich.
“He’s showing everything you want to see,” new head coach Frank Reich said in June, via NYP. “So, we’ll just keep giving him, and our team, the opportunity to get better and to earn that starting role.”
“So far, he and a lot of guys have taken the step needed to earn that spot.”
Can Young lead the Panthers to the playoffs for the first time since 2017? Let us know in the comments down below.
