Bruins Name Brad Marchand As Captain

Patrice Bergeron isn’t coming through the doors anymore. As the 2023-24 NHL Season nears closer, the Bruins were still left without a captain following the news of Bergeron’s retirement. Boston went with the logical choice and replaced him with another franchise icon. Brad Marchand will rep the C for the Bruins during their centennial season.

“I am extremely proud of Brad and the hockey player he has become,” said Boston Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs. “Brad has been a Bruin for over 15 years and had the opportunity to learn from great leaders in Zdeno Chara and Patrice Bergeron. He is ready for this opportunity and our whole team will learn from his competitive nature and tenacity. I am confident he will represent our organization with heart and grit.”

It’s hard to argue with this choice. Marchand, 35, will enter his 15th season with the Bruins this year. Marchand was a rookie during the 09 season. Marchand helped Boston lift the Cup two years later. He’s since become one of the grittiest two-way players in the sport. Marchand has 372 career goals and 862 points. All of them are in a Bruins uniform.

This move just makes sense. Nobody in that locker room is going to have a problem with Marchand carrying the torch. His resume speaks for itself. I’m a tad surprised that Charlie McAvoy didn’t get the gig but it seems rather obvious that he’s next in line to carry that mantle. Had McAvoy been named the captain, it may have upset Marchand given how long he’s been there. You know Marchand is a guy that leads by example too. He’s taken so many discounts and he’s a total pest on the ice.
