After Patrice Bergeron retired, the Boston Bruins have one important void to fill: Their captaincy. Former Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy has no suggested that longtime Bruin forward Brad Marchand should wear the “C.”
The now-Vegas Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy recently appeared on “The Cam & Strick Podcast” to explain the Bruins captaincy situation.
“Not that many guys are the perfect mix of everything, right? I think Bergeron was good at that, he led by example,” Cassidy said during a recent appearance on “The Cam & Strick Podcast.”
“He was still the hardest worker in practice; off ice, he made sure everyone felt welcome … and set some of those rules that (Zdeno Chara) had put in place. Brad will be a great leader in terms of leading by example, will to win, been there done it.”
Bergeron wore the captain badge for only three seasons with the Bruins, but his leadership became more than a letter. Bergeron gave his heart and soul to the city of Boston for 19 seasons.
The former captain would eventually release a statement on his retirement.
“For the last 20 years I have been able to live my dream every day. I have had the honor of playing in front of the best fans in the world wearing the Bruins uniform and representing my country at the highest levels of international play. I have given the game everything that I have physically and emotionally, and the game has given me back more than I could have ever imagined.”
Now, with Bergeron out of the picture, Cassidy views Marchand as the next guy in line for the job. Although Marchand can be viewed as immature and a wild card at times, but he has the most respect and leadership on the Bruins squad. If Marchand represents the Bruins with the “C” he will have to learn how to deal with the younger players, according to Cassidy.
“He’s got high expectations of everybody,” he said. “That’s just the way he is, there’s nothing wrong with that, but how he communicates with those guys will probably be – my guess – his biggest challenge if he’s the guy.”
Who should be the Bruins’ next captain? Let us know in the comments down below.
