It was headline news when it was first announced. Myles Garrett officially requesting a trade from the Cleveland Browns in Early February. Since then, speculation has run wild on where the generational edge rusher will end up and what kind of return the Browns can expect. One issue here: The Browns don’t seem interested in trading Myles Garrett.
The truth is, the Browns do have some time here. Garrett still has two years left on his contract, so there isn’t any real urgency yet to get a deal done. However, the Browns seem to think they will be able to put together a competitive enough roster in two years to convince Garrett to stay, and I don’t see a world where that happens.
Browns general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski are on very hot seats. So, I understand the desire to keep Garrett for at least one more year and hope he can drag this team to the postseason again.
The problem is that this team is still not very good, and Myles Garrett knows it. He wants to be somewhere we can compete for championships while he’s still productive, and the Browns just can’t provide that now or in the near future.
Trading Garrett seems like the right move at this point. It allows the Browns to rully reset and get some much-needed draft capital instead of watching Myles Garrett walk away in free agency. For Garrett, it hopefully becomes the change of scenery he desires and puts him in a position to play in big games.
The Eagles have been the leading team linked to the star pass rusher. Howie Roseman certainly isn’t shy about making big trades and has the capital to make this deal happen.
Many teams though, would love to make a deal; you can check out a more detailed list of those teams here. But again, all of this hinges on the Browns honoring Garrett’s wishes. Which doesn’t seem to be a priority for GM Andrew Berry at this point.
Hopefully, the Browns can come to their senses here. But I don’t think they will. The Browns are a terrible organization, and they have been for the 22 years I’ve been on this earth. When you read stories like this, though, it’s not hard to see why.
The Browns will probably try to hold onto Myles Garrett for too long and end up costing themselves a ton of draft capital. The sad part is that it wouldn’t be the dumbest thing this franchise has done in the last three years. Deshaun Watson anyone?
Give it up, Browns. You tried with Myles Garrett, and it just didn’t work. Dragging it out will only hurt both sides. Cut your losses and trade the man while his value is still the highest it will ever be.
A lot of competitive teams want Myles Garrett. Play the market right; the Browns could get a great return here. Setting up a proper rebuild that this time can hopefully find you a franchise quarterback.
