With the news breaking today that Cleveland Browns EDGE rusher Myles Garrett requesting a trade, we now begin the countdown to what will likely be one of the biggest NFL trades in recent memory. The haul that GM Andrew Berry could get could easily set up their rebuild, but he has to play his cards right. Pass rushers of this caliber don’t hit the market very often, so he should be able to get a king’s ransom in return. In this one, we are going to take a look at five teams who could come calling for Garrett.
New head coach Brian Schottenheimer could be looking to make a major splash in his first year for the Cowboys, and what better way than to pair Micah Parsons with Myles Garrett? Let’s not forget that Garrett was hoping on draft night Dallas would move up and get him, now he could have the opportunity to put on that jersey just eight years later. This team has major needs outside of a second pass rusher, however that pairing could be too good to pass up.
Another scenario where this team has some other major holes on it, but adding another EDGE rusher happens to be one. Aidan Hutchinson went down this season and we saw the lack of talent this team had on its roster at the position. This is a team in win-now mode, and should 100% be pulling a Les Snead to offload an absurd amount of picks to pair Hutchinson with Myles Garrett. If injuries had not decimated this roster, this was likely a Super Bowl team. I believe a duo of Garrett and Hutchinson could get the Lions over the hump.
The Green Bay Packers might not have the cap flexibility to make a move like this happen, given they wildly overpaid for Jordan Love, but adding a pass rusher like Myles Garrett to a defense that ranked eighth in the NFL in sacks could be worth putting this team in salary cap purgatory. Their leading sack total was Rashaan Gary with just 7.5 sacks then Devonte Wyatt with five. Adding a pretty much guaranteed 12 sacks to this roster should be considered in that front office if they want to compete in that division.
The rich get richer. Yes, I am aware that the Denver Broncos are finally getting all of their draft picks back from the Russell Wilson deal and the Sean Payton deal. But just look at what this team accomplished with minimal picks, accelerating their rebuild timeline by finishing 10-7 and earning a wild card spot. This Broncos defense led the NFL with a staggering 63 sacks this season and did this without any big-time names. If you add a player like Garrett to this defense this could consistently be a 70-sack unit year over year. This could also be viewed as second-hand help for quarterback Bo Nix.
The rebuild is WAY ahead of schedule in the DMV, and this team appears to be on the cusp of win-now mode. Why not accelerate that schedule by adding one of the best EDGE rushers in the league? The bulk of their 43 sacks came from Dante Fowler Jr. (10.5) and Frankie Luvu with eight. This unit needs an influx of talent after purging it a season ago by trading away both Montez Sweat and Chase Young. The addition of Myles Garrett could elevate this defense to new heights, and keep them in contention for the top spots in the NFC.
