Brodie Van Wagenen Has Odd Comment About Zack Wheeler
I think Zack Wheeler is going to be awesome for the Philadelphia Phillies. I felt that there was so much untapped potential with Wheeler. He was the best guy to go out and sign, in my opinion. As teams flutter into spring training, it was only a matter of time before someone asked Wheeler about the Mets.
The NY Post asked Wheeler if he ever reached out to the Mets during free agency. This was his response:
“It was basically just crickets when I did.”
He continued by saying he wasn’t surprised.
“Because it’s them,” Wheeler said. “It’s how they roll.”
Word got back to the Mets gm and he wasn’t happy:
That’s a weird comment. If they didn’t make him a competitive offer, Wheeler has a right to say what he said. What does it matter? Definitely not the right thing to say in that sort of situation. “We enjoyed our time with Zack. He’s a very talented pitcher and we wish him the best of luck in Philadelphia when he’s not playing us”. That’s all you have to say. Trying to take credit for Wheeler’s success is weak.
Speaking of credit, I don’t think they deserve credit. If anything, they were a hindrance. Firing the bullpen and pitcher coach midseason. Having Mickey Callaway as a lame duck the whole year knowing he was getting fired. New York also had a horrendous defense and Wilson Ramos did not help matters framing pitches. How did the Mets help him exactly?
This isn’t meant to be a shot at the Mets, but they have a history of handling things poorly. Just look at the “ownership transition” to Steve Cohen. We don’t even know who the Mets owner will be next year. Are we sure Brodie Van Wagenen is safe when new ownership comes into play?
