Detroit Tigers broadcaster and Hall of Fame pitcher Jack Morris is serving an indefinite suspension from Bally Sports Detroit for offensive comments he made regarding Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani during a game. Morris feigned an offensive accent when talking about how to pitch to Ohtani in the sixth inning of the Angels-Tigers game on Tuesday. Bally Sports Detroit released the following statement:
Bally Sports Detroit is extremely disappointed with the remarks analyst Jack Morris made during last night’s Tigers game. Jack has been suspended indefinitely from Tigers broadcasts and will be undergoing bias training to educate him on the impact of his comments and how he can be a positive influence in a diverse community. We have a zero-tolerance policy for bias or discrimination and deeply apologize for his insensitive remark.
Statement from Bally Sports Detroit
Bally Sports did not indicate who Morris’ replacement would be on Tigers broadcasts.
The Detroit Tigers released their own statement alongside Bally Sports:
The Detroit Tigers take immense pride in honoring the diverse cultures that make up our players, coaching staff, front office, fan base and community. We are deeply disappointed by the comments made by Jack Morris during the broadcast last night. We fully support Bally Sports Detroit’s decision and their on-going commitment to ensure that all personnel are held to the highest standards of personal conduct.
Statement from Detroit Tigers
Shohei Ohtani told reporters following the game Morris’ comments did not offend him and he did not take it personally. He hit his league-leading 40th home run in that game. Ohtani also pitched eight scoreless innings. He is among the favorites for the American League MVP Award. The Angels continue to benefit from his production with Mike Trout out of the lineup due to injury.
There is currently no indication of when Morris will return to the broadcasting booth. Bally Sports Detroit will likely bring him back once he completes his bias training.
