Joe Burrow Becomes Highest Paid Player in NFL History

The Cincinnati Bengals and Joe Burrow have agreed to terms on the largest contract in NFL history, Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.

It’s a massive 5-year, $275 million deal that will pay him $55 million a year. Burrow is also getting $219 million in guaranteed money.

Burrow has been waiting for a deal all offseason, and there was buzz that it wouldn’t get done until the Bengals’ season started. However, Burrow relaxed Who Dey nation in his first press conference since coming back from a calf strain suffered a few weeks ago in camp.

“This is where I want to be my whole career, we’re working towards making that happen,” Burrow said. Finally, the city of Cincinnati can take a collective breath.

Joey B is the fourth quarterback this offseason to reset the market, and gets $12.5 million more than the most recent signed Justin Herbert ($262.5 million).

Since becoming the starter in Cincinnati, Burrow has changed the culture of the team and the city. Joe Shiesty has won back-to-back AFC North titles and twice advanced to the AFC championship game.

The team reached Super Bowl 56, but fell short of getting the Lombardi. That year (2021), Burrow threw for 4,611 yards, 34 TDs, and 14 INTs on a 70.4 completion percentage and a 108.3 rating.

He was just as good in 2022. Burrow logged 4,475 yards, 35 TDs to 12 INTs and a 68.3 completion percentage. He also became the most accurate quarterback in NFL history (68.2%).

It’s been a busy offseason for the Bengals. The club extended Logan Wilson, Germaine Pratt and Trey Hendrickson and now Burrow.

Tee Higgins is still waiting for his extension, but there’s been no indication of when that deal is going to get done. Fortunately, Higgins still has one year left on his deal. That means the Bengals can hold off on paying him until 2024. However, 2021 Rookie of the Year Ja’Marr Chase will be eligible for an extension that offseason.
