BREAKING: Jerod Mayo Fired From New England Patriots

Jerod Mayo has been fired from the New England Patriots after only one season. This was first reported by Adam Schefter on Twitter/X:

The move came after the last game of the year in the 2024 NFL season. The Patriots had the #1 pick before week 18 of the NFL season and moved down to #4 pick overall after beating the Buffalo Bills. About an hour after the game, the Patriots fired Jerod Mayo, who is often soon to be fired. Most teams wait until the day after the week of the regular season, infamously called “Black Monday.” But, the Patriots felt like they needed to fire him immediately after.

Some have speculated that the Jets interviewing Mike Vrabel may have sped up this decision to fire Jerod Mayo, and so soon. Let’s remember that Jerod Mayo was handpicked from Bill Belichick himself to be the next head coach of the Patriots this year and in all honesty, the Patriots were not going to contend this year and were likely going to have a top pick again this year. However, when the news that Mike Vrabel will be available on the head coaching market, everyone is trying to convince them to coach their team. More pressure was put on the Patriots to make a move after an AFC East rival interviewed with him.

The NFL is a cutthroat league, I do think Jerod Mayo may have potential as a head coach, however, with someone as tenured as Mike Vrabel comes available, with the connections with the Patriots already, mutual interest, AND the Jets interviewing with him, I’m not sure Jerod Mayo had any shot to stay after this season. He might attract some interest around the league with other teams looking for a head coach or he might find a coordinator job. Maybe a reunion with Bill Belichick is in the works?
