Adrian Wojnarowski has confirmed that the Atlanta Hawks have traded Dejounte Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans. In return, the Hawks receive Larry Nance Jr., Dyson Daniels, a 2025 first-round pick via the Lakers, and a 2027 first-round pick between the Bucks and Pelicans. Murray, 27, averaged 22.5 PPG, 5.3 REB, and 6.4 AST during the 2023-2024 season for the Hawks.
Dejounte Murray’s stint in Atlanta was short lived, but successful. He spent only two years on their squad after leaving the San Antonio Spurs in 2022. Murray’s 2023-2024 season was one of his best yet. He started 78 games for the Hawks, and posted career highs in points per game and three-point shooting. Murray shot 36% on 7.1 attempts beyond the arc per game, up from 34% on 5.2 attempts the previous season.
Murray will now find himself paired up with Zion Williamson in New Orleans. Williamson has struggled to find a consistent rhythm, missing many games and even a complete season to injuries. Assuming Williamson can stay healthy, Murray brings a much desired three-point game to New Orleans that has to potential to combine well with their offensive scheme.
As for Atlanta, it appears they are entering full rebuild mode. Shipping Murray to New Orleans in exchange for a myriad of picks and players implies that they are retooling. It seems likely Trae Young will be dealt to a different team soon. Young has expressed interest in joining the Pelicans, but has also mentioned the San Antonio Spurs as a desired destination. With free agency beginning this Sunday, we can all expect to see some major moves being made.
