Josh Allen might not be willing to throw Dalton Kincaid under the bus for costing the Bills in the playoff game against the Chiefs… but general manager Brandon Beane was kinda willing to.
Kincaid, 25, was taken in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft and Beane admits that the former Utah product has underperformed with Buffalo thus far.
“Dalton didn’t have that next step up type of year,” said Bills’ head coach Sean McDermott during his end-of-season press conference in Orchard Park. “Some of it was he missed some games due to injury. Then, he came back and was trying to play through some of it. As far as the last, the last ball, Dalton makes those plays. It never comes down to just one play, and I want to make sure everybody knows that.”
“He’s going to have to continue to work on his play strength. He’s not as built and muscular as, let’s just say, Dawson is, and so that’s one of the nuances of this game,” said Beane. “In college you don’t play 17 games plus playoffs, so building your body up to withstand what it takes.”
“My confidence, our confidence in Dalton is extremely high. He knows and we know that he has to get to a level of health and strength, playing strength, so that he can remain healthy through the course of a full season,” said McDermott.
I’ll be the first to admit, even I expected better from Kincaid. I thought he was going to be a quality player in terms of fantasy (mostly because of Josh Allen) but that sure as hell didn’t happen. The 6-foot-4 tight end reeled in just 44 receptions for 448 yards and two scores this past season. Not to mention the fact that he lost the game on that drop against Kansas City.
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised Kincaid has underperformed. If anything, it’s another win for our VSM NFL Draft department. I had a 4th round grade on Kincaid coming out of college and that’s exactly what he’s looked like. He should have never been taken in the first round and that’s obvious now. The only difference is the VSM NFL Draft team doesn’t need hindsight bias to be more accurate than the rest of the industry!
