Bralen Trice 2024 NFL Draft Profile
Coming into the 2023 season, Washington’s Bralen Trice was seen as one of the premier EDGE prospects. However, a down year and failure to live up to expectations, outside of a steller Sugar Bowl, have significantly cooled his draft stock. Any hopes to revive that stock might have died with a horrific NFL Combine performance. What does his draft profile look like? Let’s talk about it.
Trice, a former three-star recruit out of Arizona, committed to Washington in 2019. He took a redshirt his freshman year and hardly saw the field during the 2020 season. The 2022 tape is what had the people talking, finishing the year with 10 sacks after only having two the year prior. Many expected him to take a jump in production, instead, he regressed, finishing with seven sacks on the year. Worth noting, he had 137 pressure in his final two years (we are going to talk about this later).
Bralen Trice does have a pretty nice frame for an NFL EDGE rusher at 6’4, 245 lbs. One thing you want to see in the NFL is someone who can set the edge, and Trice does a solid job at that. The motor runs *pretty* hot, which we can work with but it isn’t consistent. The pass rush moves have both speed and bull rush moves, which is a nice trait to have. Being a one-trick pony is easier to scheme for. Football IQ is a plus, knowing when to disengage and get outside to help in run plays.
The closing speed I am not sure is there. All those pressures and he finished the year with just seven sacks? Not for me. Not overly twitchy which is a disappointment because he had signs of it in 2022. Hips are really tight, the knee bend is not great. Trice dropped weight going into the NFL Combine, and still ran fairly slow (4.72). Not really sure how he will line up in the NFL, because he isn’t totally proficient as a stand-up rusher, but he also struggles to get off in a three-point stance.
I’ve kind of gone back and forth on Bralen Trice. The frame and potential are there, but he just turned 23 and I am not sure if the ceiling is as high as some other players in the draft. I think I landed on a third-round grade on Trice. This EDGE class is not as strong as in years past, so maybe NFL teams might view him higher based on previous production, but I don’t know if I could pull the trigger any sooner than the third round.
