Let’s have a conversation about Malachi Nelson.
The former five-star recruit originally committed to USC where he was expected to be the future of the position for the program. However, he would only appear in one game for the Trojans. He would then bolt to Boise State for his redshirt Freshman season. Expectations coming into the season were sky high, only to come crumbling down when he couldn’t beat out Maddux Madsen for the starting job. So, instead of staying put and putting in the work to try to earn the job next season, On3.com reports he is entering the transfer portal to play for his third team in three seasons.
Are we sure that Malachi Nelson is *that* good? Coming out, he was the No. 5 quarterback in his class and the No. 13 overall player in his class. He was pegged to be a big-time prospect who could be in that next crop of elite college quarterbacks. Yet, he will be looking for a home for the third time in as many years and likely isn’t guaranteed a starting spot at a P4 school. Let’s be honest. He has three years of eligibility remaining, but just turned 21 years old on December 7th.
Malachi Nelson splitting from Boise State is both a shock and not at all. It’s unlikely that Maddux Madsen will go anywhere as the starter, and if Nelson couldn’t beat him out before he likely has no shot now. I don’t want to completely bury the kid, but I’m starting to think the jury is back with a verdict on him, and their conclusion is bust. I’ll happily walk my comments back if he turns it around, but he has to win a starting job first before we can entertain that conversation.
