Bob Myers: Danny Ainge ‘always’ asked for Stephen Curry

In an alternate universe, the greatest shooter who ever lived–Stephen Curry–could have donned a Boston Celtics uniform … if former Celtics and current president Utah Jazz Danny Ainge got his way that is.

Curry on the Golden State Warriors is seemingly a perfect match–like Tim Duncan with the Spurs, Hakeem Olajuwon with the Rockets or Kobe Bryant with the Lakers. Stephen Curry and a trade seems like a demeaning combination of words how unlikely that sounds.

This rose when former Warriors President Bob Myers was a guest on The Woj Pod, revealing Ainge was one of those executives who consistently asked about Curry.

“I never was upset at anybody asking (about Curry),” Myers said. “The GM’s job is to mine for trades. That’s a GM’s job. But Ainge was the one that was always asking. … We laughed. Like I said, we have a really good relationship. But you know, you got to ask. I mean, everybody knew that wasn’t happening, so it was kind of a good laugh.”

Myers was in charge of the Warriors for over a decade, so I can imagine there were a lot of instances where Ainge kicked the tires about Curry. Where he’s at–a four–time champion, all-time leader in 3-pointers made and first-ever unanimous MVP–I think the Warriors were way better off than any potential Celtics trade, or any trade.

It is cool to think about what could have been with such ideas, seeing Stephen Curry add to great Celtics history would’ve been a sight to see. But who knows how that would have turned out–probably nowhere near the heights he reached in the bay.

If it did, Bob Myers would have never worked another job in the NBA again allowing someone like Curry to leave town. The ripple effect he would have had on the Boston Celtics would have shaken the NBA to its core no doubt about it.

I applaud Danny Ainge for exploring the improvement of the roster with such ambition. His impact is felt on this Celtics organization to this day even now moving on to the Utah Jazz. Exploring all opportunities to get better is the name of the game, Danny Ainge in this case was shooting for the moon.

Curry on The Celtics? Yeah, that sounds illegal.
