Blue Jays Sign Anthony Santander

SOMEONE ACTUALLY TOOK THE BLUE JAYS’ MONEY!!! Well, beyond Jeff Hoffman, who flunked two physicals (one from Baltimore and one for Atlanta) before he took money from Toronto. Now the Jays are landing slugger Anthony Santander to a five year contract.

The craziest part of the story is that JP Morosi finally broke a story. Pretty positive it’s his first of the Winter. It’s more hilarious that you consider it’s the Blue Jays for this absurd reason. But yes, MLB Network insider Jon Morosi was the first to report the news:

It was later revealed that Santander will sign a five year contract for $90 million.

Anthony Santander was snubbed from 2024 All-Star Game

Santander, 30, hit a career high 44 homers last year while sporting a batting line of .235/.308/.506. Beyond just mostly being a power hitter who doesn’t hit for a ton of contact, Santander falls short in the defensive side of things. The Venezuelan outfielder has -3 Defensive Runs Saved and -13 Outs Above Average for his career. Does that mean Santander will get some reps at first base and or DH? It remains to be seen if he can survive in the outfield in spacious Toronto.

The Orioles already made their move to replace Santander. They signed Tyler O’Neill earlier in the offseason for far less money. O’Neill has a chance to replace Santander while providing much better defense in the outfield. Otherwise, it’s been an incredibly quiet offseason for the team who ended up losing Santander to a division rival.
