Blue Jackets Fire Jarmo Kekalainen

Jarmo Kekalainen should have been fired a long time ago. Today the ownership in Columbus finally regained a pulse and fired the bum that’s been tanking this franchise. After 11 mediocre years on the job, Kekalainen finally got the boot from the Blue Jackets.

The Blue Jackets put out a press release following the news.

“The Columbus Blue Jackets have relieved Jarmo Kekalainen of his duties as general manager of the National Hockey League club, President of Hockey Operations and Alternate Governor John Davidson announced today.  Davidson, along with the team’s hockey operations management team, will assume general manager’s duties while the club goes through the process of hiring a replacement.”

Media availability with Davidson will be streamed live on the Blue Jackets’ YouTube page at 11:30 a.m. ET today and will be recorded and posted afterwards on BlueJackets.com.

“This is one of the hardest days I have had in my career as Jarmo is a friend, someone I have a great deal of respect for and someone who has done a lot of good things during his time here,” said Davidson.  “While the future of our club is bright, our performance has not been good enough and it is time for a fresh perspective as we move forward.”

I’m not sure what needs to be said that I haven’t said already. As soon as Mike Babcock got fired, it should have been the end for Jarmo. This Blue Jackets team isn’t going anywhere. If five trips to the playoffs in 11 years is your calling card with zero real success, I have a hard time believing this guy kept his job this long.

Good riddance. Today is a good day for all the fans in Columbus.

Oh, and WTF was Johnny Gaudreau thinking again? No, I have not forgotten. His decision is still one of the dumbest of all-time.
