Blake Snell, Giants agree to two-year contract
The defending NL Cy Young winner has finally found a home. Blake Snell is signing with the Giants on a two-year, $62 million contract. The deal also includes an opt-out after the 2024 season.
Surprisingly, Jon Heyman of the New York Post was first to break the news (and also got it right.)
Snell’s new contract is another example of a Scott Boras masterclass. The former Cy Young shouldn’t be signing for only two years, but at least Snell is on a team before the Giants open up the regular season.
The 31 year old lefty had his best season since 2018 last season, throwing a 2.25 ERA in 180 innings with 234 strikeouts. That accounts for 31.5 percent of opposing hitters Snell struck out, with opposing hitters only making contact 64.2 percent of their swings against Snell.
He’s now the fifth active pitcher to have multiple Cy Young awards under their belt. Many teams including the Yankees and Angels were the most interested in Snell besides the Giants.
The Yankees reportedly offered him a six year, $150 million offer back in January, but Boras wanted more years or AAV.
The list of Boras clients on the free agent market are finally going down. Cody Bellinger re-signed with the Cubs back in February. Matt Chapman struck a deal with the Giants as well a few weeks ago. Bellinger, Chapman, and Snell didn’t break the $100 million mark in their contracts as Boras had hoped.
Even in a stacked NL West, the Giants have been making some solid moves. Chapman is still a premier defender. Snell is obviously the former Cy Young winner. Jorge Soler and Jung Hoo Lee will be solid pieces in the lineup.
As for Snell, he joins Logan Webb as the new 1-2 punch in San Francisco. The Giants most likely won’t win their division, but expect them to make some kind of noise with their new ace.
Now if only someone would sign Jordan Montgomery.
