Michigan will be without star running back Blake Corum for the remainder of the 2022 college football season as the Heisman candidate is set to undergo season-ending knee surgery, according to Ian Rapoport.
Despite Corum’s surgery the specifics of his injury have yet to be announced. Obviously, season-ending knee surgery is never good, but this situation could be far worse if it is revealed that Corum has a torn ligament. Hopefully, this surgery is precautionary to help avoid that.
Corum first sustained this injury in Michigan’s win against Illinois on Nov. 19, 2022. The injury occurred as Corum took a helmet to the front of the knee. He attempted to return in the second half, but only got one carry. A week later against Ohio State Corum got two carries in the first quarter and sat out the remainder of the game.
Corum played a major role in Michigan’s offensive success and helped them finish the season undefeated. In total, Corum finished 2022 with 247 carries for 1463 yards and 18 touchdowns. That stat line may be good enough to get him an invite to the Heisman Trophy Ceremony. It is unlikely that he wins the award though.
Needless to say, this injury will greatly affect Corum’s draft stock. There is a handful of running backs that scout may prefer ahead of Corum. Throw a knee surgery in the mix and things may not turn out in Corum’s favor.
Down the stretch, Michigan will have to replace Corum’s production, but they should be able to handle the burden. Backup running back Donovan Edwards looked great against Ohio State and Michigan has one of the best offensive lines in the country. Still, Michigan will be missing Corum as they head into the Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoffs.
