The NFL is really a coaching league. It’s hard to put a price tag on how valuable coaching is. It can really impact a player’s career arch and often times gets overlooked. Just imagine if Sean McVay never paired up with Jared Goff. He would probably still be a bust. Well, now it’s Blake Bortles turn to get a taste of McVay.

Bortles spoke with the LA Times about how damn good Sean McVay really is:

“Seeing how he coaches, how all the other coaches coach and how the guys are receptive and take it, I’ve never seen anything like it,” Bortles said.

“I also expect to be a starter in this league again, and I know it’s not going to be here in L.A. So I’m trying to just better myself,” Bortles said. “And if I get an opportunity to play, great. If not, then I spent a year learning from McVay, and being around a really good organization.”

Bortles isn’t going to see the field other than in the preseason. Goff, despite the fact that he actually sucks, is locked into a starting job. This is still a really good opportunity for Bortles. Sit and learn behind what might be the best head coach in the NFL. Bortles has never had a coach quite like McVay. Even Doug Marrone (who I like) if an offensive line guy at heart. Bortles has never had a smart play caller.

Will Bortles ever get a starting job again? Probably not. The level of quarterback play continues to improve by leaps and bounds every year. Essentially ever team has a young quarterback. Only more of them are going to get fluttered into the league. Bortles will have to rebuild his stock as a backup quarterback, which is probably the best job in America anyway.
