I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I actually agree with Bill Simmons on something. Everything I’ve said about Simmons still plays. His horniness levels on the fake trades stuff is still embarrassing. However, in regard to the new CBA, he’s 1000% right.
On the latest episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, The Ringer founder and Rob Mahoney had a conversation about how the new NBA CBA is one of the worst things to happen in sports… and he’s right.
“The new CBA is just an apocalypse,” Simmons said. “It’s one of the worst things that I can remember in any pro sports league, how it played out this way where you have good teams basically sabotaging themselves because they’re so afraid of these penalties that I don’t know who wanted. I don’t know who the penalties serve other than the owners as a check and a balance for them not to spend too much money. That seems to be the only positive.”
I’ve written multiple blogs on this already. For the sake of time, I’ll share these two below that Simmons didn’t hit on in his rant:
B: Years of Service Hidden consequence.
Here’s the worst part of it all. Adam Silver punishes real team-builders. It does not matter how well you draft and develop. You’re actually punished for doing exactly that. The reason why the ratings of the hockey 4 Nations did so well is because it’s best on best. Silver doesn’t want best on best. He wants a collection of mediocrity mixed in with musical chairs. Nobody wants to watch that.
This CBA is so bad, and it’s going to hurt the game. The entire CBA needs to be trashed, and Silver needs to be fired before he creates more damage to the sport.
