Best Destinations for Chris Paul
After conflicting reports for weeks regarding his future with the Phoenix Suns, Chris Paul was notified Wednesday of his impending release from the team. Now a free agent, what’s next for the 12-time All-Star, and where are the best destinations for the future Hall-of-Famer?
Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers must be near the top of the list for Paul. He has one box left to check on his career bingo card and that’s to win a championship. The Lakers may not be title favorites, but they still have the best defensive player in the world in Anthony Davis and they still have LeBron James. With that duo and a cast of good role players, they’re certainly going to be in title contention next season.
Additionally, D’Angelo Russell, Rui Hachimura and Austin Reaves are all upcoming free agents. Because of this, Los Angeles may not be able to bring Russell back. The Lakers need another point guard if Russell departs, and Paul needs a place where he can chase that elusive championship.
Philadelphia 76ers
Rumors are swirling that James Harden is considering opting out of his contract next season to return to his old stomping grounds in Houston. Paul doesn’t bring the same scoring upside that Harden does but could be a stable force for the offense.
With a major void at the point guard position and Paul being a cheap option, I think it could be mutually beneficial for both sides. Paul gets to ring chase and the 76ers bring in a steady veteran that can still make decisions and play make at a high level.
Los Angeles Clippers
The Clippers would basically be a geriatric facility if they brought in Paul, but it’d be a nice reunion. Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Paul are all on the wrong side of 30 and have all dealt with major injuries. Regardless, this team still needs a legitimate point guard.
No disrespect to Russell Westbrook, but he can’t and never will be able to set the table like Paul does. Plus, I think Westbrook is more suited to a sixth-man role where he can lead a bench unit. Paul gets to return to the franchise and chase a ring, and the Clippers finally get a good point guard fit to pair with their star wing duo.
