This week’s best college football uniforms went 3-4 in their games this week, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t look good while losing. This week’s list has four all-black combinations, along with five new football teams, and two returning. You can find last week’s list here. Who made the list this week?
Taulia Tagovailoa played like hot garbage Friday night when his Maryland Terrapins hosted #5 Iowa. He threw five interceptions in a 51-14 loss despite being up 7-3 at the end of the first quarter. Still, Maryland busted out an all-black uniform combination – perfect for a non-Saturday night game against a big-time opponent. Over the past handful of years, the Terps have gotten very experimental with the Maryland state flag and how to incorporate it into their football uniforms. I think they found the perfect balance with this one, and as a New Jerseyan, I envy the Maryland state flag for how unique and fun it is.
Oh, look, another Friday night blackout uniform set. Utah State and BYU played a much closer game, however, as the #13 Cougars got out of Maverik Stadium with a 34-20 win. BYU could have made the list if their facemasks were chrome royal blue instead of silver, so this is the Aggies time to shine. We have seen the Aggies bust out blackout uniforms in recent years, but none have looked this clean. The matte black finish on the helmet with the white logo and facemask absolutely pops. Before, Utah State’s numbers on their blackout set were navy blue with a white outline. They shifted to a white number with a silver outline, and their “UTAH STATE” lettering is navy blue outlined in white. It’s a fantastic uniform set that adds a cherry on top with the minimalist outline design of a bull on each shoulder. Chef’s kiss.
What would a best college football uniforms article be without an appearance from the Ducks? I guess last week’s article stunk, but Oregon has dominated the uniform game for a while now. Although the #3 Ducks lost to unranked Stanford 31-24 in overtime, their uniforms were beautiful. It’s a two-color uniform set done in a modern style. We’re all accustomed to Oregon’s wings on their helmets by now, but this white and Kelly-green combination bangs. Pair that with a white top, Kelly-green pants, and white accessories and you get this masterpiece. Like the helmets, you cannot forget about their signature shoulder wings.
North Carolina State is the first school to appear twice on the list for 2021. The #23 Wolfpack survived unranked Louisiana Tech at home just one week after upsetting Clemson the week prior. This week, they unveiled their blackout set for their 3:00 ET start that went until nightfall. I must admit, the shoulders are a little busy, but the uniform as a whole is awesome. Tuffy (looking amazing, as always) as a helmet logo is the best uniform decision the Wolfpack have made in its history. The white numbers and letters with red outlines stand out on the black backdrop. It gives room for different colors to be used for accessories, though I think the black everything looks best.
One last blackout uniform for good measure. The Rainbow Warriors rocked one for their 27-24 win over #18 Fresno State, further proving my point that we shouldn’t rank teams until we know more about them. Hawaii’s helmets featured the block H on one side and the Hawaii state outline of the other, which makes me so happy because they’re Hawaii for God’s sake. If they aren’t incorporating the islands into their uniform at all, it’s a crime.
Boise State unleashed a throwback logo on their helmets and an all-orange set this weekend against Nevada. The Broncos have mixed and matched blue, orange, white, black, and grey over the years, and this uniform still found a way to be unique. Though they lost 41-31, Boise State’s white facemasks looked amazing – matching the white numbers and letters on the front of their tops. For some odd reason, though, the Broncos decided to use silver for the back numbers and letters. It left this set feel a bit incomplete, but they still looked great with their orange and white accessories. Unfortunately, Boise State is on the road for Halloween, which means we most likely won’t see an orange combination for the upcoming spooky season.
Lastly, we have a back-to-back appearance from ECU. Instead of yellow pants and facemasks, this week, the Pirates went back to purple. For their 52-29 win over Tulane Saturday, they kept the same top with yellow numbers and letters instead of their regular white. I could have done without the huge yellow stripe down the side of the pants, but then I remember ECU’s helmets are chrome…purple chrome!
Which school do you think had the best college football uniforms from week 5?
